Anyone else out there at a loss for what to wear this time of year? Every March as I wait eagerly for the incessant cold to melt into spring, I can't help but feel completely uninspired by my same old, tired winter clothes. I fight the alternating desires to either throw out every single thing in my closet or -- cold, be damned! -- rush the season and start wearing sundresses and sandals unreasonably early.
This year has been particularly hard. Having just returned from the temperate paradise that is Austin in March, the cold and impending snow are feeling particularly restrictive to my wardrobe. Rather than settle into my usual cold-slump uniform of 501s, vintage sweatshirts, and ankle boots, I decided to have a little fun with what should (hopefully) be one of the last frigid weeks of the year.
Inspired by a certain blue fur coat of mine that has drawn innumerable comparisons to Cookie Monster and a day last month when I unwittingly dressed like Elmo for work, I decided to style a week's worth of looks that Jim Henson himself would approve of. Elmo, Big Bird, The Count, Oscar the Grouch -- the gang's all here. Follow along this week, and I'll show you how to get, how to get to Sesame Street.
For the first look of the series, I chose Big Bird, the larger-than-life canary who lives in a giant nest on Sesame Street. I took particular inspiration from the bright, warm color palette of Big Bird's plumage and legs, as well as his top heavy proportions.
To keep things fresh, I experimented with thick orange eyeliner and added Balenciaga-inspired sock boots. And to keep the look clean, I kept the hair simple and painstakingly matched the colors of every item to the same three shades of yellow, magenta, and orange.
So, what do you think? Would you wear this look? Would you have known I was channeling Big Bird if you saw me on the street?
